I came to Foundations for learning by way of a winding path. When I relocated to Truro in 2011, I was looking for a change of pace after working in the business world for many years. I have a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English, a Business degree, and more. What was I going to do with all this? Opening the lines of communication, and establishing good working relationships was where I thrived.
I joined the team at Mariposa Reading Achievement Center, and it was certainly a change, but not just in pace.
After extensive training, I began to experience the change that the program offered the students. I was amazed at what the students didn’t know when they came and how the guidance of this program gave them what they did and would need, and more. I was excited to watch the transformation and the confidence building they would display. It truly was a changing experience. Working one on one with children was not really what I imagined myself doing, but here I was, enjoying every minute.
Called back to the business world in 2015 for a 4-year contract, I never quite forgot the lessons I learned at Mariposa. I would often find myself using the strategies I had taught, whether it was in my own work or in helping someone else. It certainly made me a great proof-reader! I was the go-to person for “how do you spell this”.
In July of 2018, I joined the team at Foundations for Learning. Again, I had that connection with the students. The moment when a child, who has been struggling, “gets it,” grabbed me again. I love working with Foundations for Learning because I want to make a difference. Luckily, I now have that opportunity.
