"Our son started primary knowing only the letters in his name. Practicing letters or doing any sort of prep work for primary always caused friction on the limited amount of family time we had.

He was more of a physical kind of guy- riding his bike, playing hockey or just being outside was more of a priority to him!

He had supports in his early years at school through the reading recovery program and he did catch up in grade 1.

We were thankful for that!

Over the next two years he had some learning support time to help as well. But it wasn’t enough.

I was a teacher in the same school… when we examined our school wide reading data he was always one of the ones in the ‘red’- flagged as struggling.

As a teacher I thought- that’s not good- how can WE help him?
As a mom I thought- this is heartbreaking- how can I help him?

In November of 2021, he started Foundations for Learning- his Grade 3 year. Over the course of the next year and a half we saw consistent improvement with his reading and writing and his enthusiasm for learning.

He completed the program in June.

This year he is in Grade 5. His teacher did a reading assessment with him today and he is reading 2 levels above where he should be at the beginning of grade 5.
To say we are proud is an understatement. He is proud of himself and is so confident in his abilities.

No more red flags!

Foundations for Learning has been a game changer for him.
